Why are we in this world (part 2)?
The Work of Byron Katie is the management tool I use to help myself and others make a shift from fearful thinking into the deeper wisdom of our intuition. Here is an example of The Work based on an experience that seemed, from every angle, to be a problem (see: Why are we in this world, part1).

First, I fill in a Judge-Your-Neighbor Worksheet

When: The first week after the summer holidays, Monday morning after breakfast
Where: in my office, at my desk
Situation: Everyone in the house has gone to work, but I have no job and donít know what to do.
1. I feel depressed because my life has no meaning.
2. I want my life to make me and others happy.
3. My life should offer me something meaningful to do.
4. I need my life to be meaningful for others.
5. My life is empty, useless, depressing.
6. I donít ever want to feel this depressed again.

After completing the worksheet, I ask myself the four questions about the first stressful thought: My life has no meaning.
1.In this moment, at my desk: Is it true that my life has no meaning? When I listen to the answer that comes from my heart rather than my mind: Yes.
2.Can you absolutely know that itís true that my life has no meaning? When I sit with this and look even deeper inside of me: No.
3.How do you react when you believe that your life has no meaning? I feel pain in my heart. My breathing is shallow. I have no energy. I see life as hostile and myself as a failure and a loser. With all my might, I'm trying to find a solution to change this, but I do not have energy for it. The thought that my life has no meaning is very painful for me.
4. Who would you be without the thought that your life has no meaning? My heart beats quietly without pain. My breathing is going deeper and that's fine. Actually, I enjoy every breath of fresh air giving me new energy . I feel the chair thatís supporting me. Iím allowed to just sit here and do nothing. I give myself permission without condemning me. I feel very peaceful and relaxed.

Then I try to find examples for the turnarounds of: My life has no meaning.
ē I turn it around to my own thoughts (because life is not a person but a thing): My thoughts on my life have no meaning.
Examples: They cause feelings of depression. They cause restriction in my breathing and pain around my heart. I lose energy and therefore thereís nothing I like doing.
ē The turnaround to the opposite: My life does have meaning
Examples: My husband, children, mother and the dog would be very sad if I died. I can do The Work as a meditation and learn from it. If I develop myself in this way, my life fills with meaning. I can allow myself to enjoy that thereís nothing I need to do. Instead of telling myself that I 'm a loser and a failure. I can better explore these stressful thoughts with the four questions of The Work.

When I ask myself the four questions about the other stressful thoughts of my Worksheet, I discover
ē I want me to make myself and others happy by no longer telling myself that my life has no meaning and that I failed and I'm a loser.
ē I already have something meaningful to give: my joy. It makes more sense to enjoy what there is. Iím still on vacation while others have to work. It is peaceful to follow my breathing and interesting to do The Work .
ē I do not need my life to be meaningful to others. I need my life to be meaningful to me, especially when I enjoy what is happening instead of worrying about what is not happening.
ē My thoughts on my life are empty, useless, depressing.

Finally, I go to the turnaround number 6 of my worksheet and check how Iím doing.
ē I am willing to feel depressed. Because it might happen again. Because it will let me know when I am not loving what is. I can look forward to feeling depressed because I like to question my stressful thoughts with The Work.
